Scope of Services
The Wellness Center offers short-term solution focused counseling services to currently enrolled, eligible students. All students seeking services begin with an initial assessment. In collaboration with the student, counselors use their clinical judgment to determine which services best align with the student’s needs.
When a student’s concerns fall within the center’s scope of practice, the counselor and student work together to identify counseling goals and pursue them in a focused, time-effective manner.
In cases where a student’s needs exceed the Wellness Center’s scope of practice—such as requiring long-term psychotherapy or specialized care—counselors will provide appropriate community referrals and assist in connecting the student with off-campus providers.
Referral to off-campus providers may be recommended for the following situations (including but not limited to):
- A longstanding or severe mental health condition requiring ongoing or long-term care
- A need for therapy more than once per week
- Concerns requiring consistent or recurring treatment throughout a student’s academic career
- Treatment needs outside the scope of current staff expertise
- Significant psychological distress requiring immediate inpatient or intensive outpatient services
- Incompatibility between the student’s schedule and Counseling Services’ hours of operation
- Court-mandated assessments or treatment beyond the center’s scope
- Students already receiving therapy from another provider
- History of multiple psychiatric hospitalizations
