Aurora University’s Algebra Recitation Program has been named a finalist for the 2025 Examples of Excelencia, a national, data-driven initiative recognizing programs that demonstrate evidence of effectiveness in improving Latino and all student success in higher education. Excelencia in Education, the nation’s premier authority on advancing Latino talent and strengthening the nation’s workforce and civic leadership, recently announced the 2025 Examples of Excelencia finalists.

AU’s Algebra Recitation Program seeks to enhance student success in entry-level college algebra courses by implementing innovative teaching practices and providing comprehensive support for a diverse student body.

“It’s really important for us in higher education to do everything we can to support students from different backgrounds. We can’t just teach things the way they’ve always been done,” said Gina Rahn, professor and chair of mathematics at AU. “We have to find ways to make the experience more engaging and meaningful for our students.”

Due to declining college math readiness, a recitation requirement was introduced at Aurora University for all college algebra students in fall 2022. With nearly half identifying as Latino/a, culturally responsive teaching methods were added to create an inclusive environment and provide targeted support.

The initiative resulted in strong outcomes for college algebra students, including significant outcomes for Latino/a students: Content knowledge for Latino/a students improved by 5% and their college algebra grade point average improved 7%. Each student spent an average of eight additional hours per semester in online coursework. The Academic Support Center also reported a significant increase in student engagement, with more students seeking help beyond required recitations in both math and other subjects.

AU joins more than 400 programs that have earned recognition through Examples of Excelencia since the program began in 2005. AU’s Algebra Recitation Program and the other finalists represent the innovative and impactful work happening across higher education institutions and organizations committed to expanding access to a quality college education for all students.
