Mumps Outbreak 2006

What Can I Do to Prevent Getting Mumps?

  1. Make sure that you are up to date with your immunizations. If you have not submitted your immunization records to the Wellness Center please do so ASAP!
    • The level of protection offered by one mumps vaccine is approximately 80% and 90% after two doses of vaccine
  2. Follow proper respiratory etiquette:
    • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue away after use
  3. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If water is not near, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner
    • Keep in mind that proper handwashing involves using soap and warm water and washing for a length of 15-20 seconds
  4. Do not share eating utensils or drinking containers (including WATER BOTTLES)
  5. Refrain from close contact with individuals who are sick/experiencing symptoms
  6. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
    • Germs are often spread when you touch something that is contaminated with germs and then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
