Mumps Outbreak 2006
What Can I Do to Prevent Getting Mumps?
- Make sure that you are up to date with your immunizations. If you
have not submitted your immunization records to the Wellness Center
please do so ASAP!
- The level of protection offered by one mumps vaccine is
approximately 80% and 90% after two doses of vaccine
- Follow proper respiratory etiquette:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough
or sneeze, and throw the tissue away after use
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you
cough or sneeze. If water is not near, use an alcohol-based hand cleaner
- Keep in mind that proper handwashing involves using soap
and warm water and washing for a length of 15-20 seconds
- Do not share eating utensils or drinking containers (including
WATER BOTTLES)
- Refrain from close contact with individuals who are sick/experiencing
symptoms
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- Germs are often spread when you touch something that is
contaminated with germs and then you touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
