Connecting Your PC to the Residence Hall Network
Students in AU's residence halls can connect their personal computers directly to Resnet, the university's residence hall network. This connection will give you direct, fast, full-time access to the Internet, your email account, library databases, and Moodle online course management system. This document provides some basic information about this service and includes instructions on how to get connected.
Here is what you will need to bring to campus if you'd like to take advantage of this networking opportunity:
- A desktop or notebook computer. Be sure to bring the installation disks that came with your machine - you may need them to complete the setup process.
- A suitable Ethernet network interface card (NIC) for your computer. Our network is a 10 Mbps system and requires 10BaseT-compatible cards. Many computers can be purchased with the network adapter already installed, or one can be installed by the seller at the time of purchase. Inexpensive Ethernet cards to fit most computers can also be purchased at computer and office supply stores. In some cases, the seller will install the card in your computer for an additional fee. Note that the card must be equipped with an RJ-45 (10BaseT) connector, which is similar to but slightly larger than a standard telephone connector. Our system will not support older network adapters that only have coaxial (10Base2) cable connectors.
- A standard Ethernet cable to link your computer to the wall face plate. The cable must be made from CAT-5 wire and be equipped with an RJ-45 plug at each end. Network cables of various lengths are usually available at computer and office supply stores. We suggest that you get one at least 15 feet long to give you more flexibility about where to set up your computer.
In order to connect to the Internet your PC has to be assigned an IP number. AU Information Technology Services (ITS) has implemented a system that will automatically assign an IP number to your machine every time you turn on your machine. In the interests of network security, before you connect to the residence hall network for the first time you must perform a one-time registration for your PC. This process requires that a browser supporting 128-bit encryption be installed on your machine. Most current browsers have this capability. You can follow the links below to sites on the web that will enable you to download a copy of a browser for your machine at no cost.
Follow these simple steps to activate your network connection.
- Obtain Your Student ID and Password. You will need to know your official Aurora student username (the one you use for email) before accessing the network. Contact Information Technology Services if you do not know your login.
- Physically Connect your computer to the network using the Ethernet port in your room. You must use an Ethernet cable. This is not the same as a telephone cable. It should have RJ-45 plugs on each end, which resemble phone plugs but have 8 rather than 4 connectors and are larger. Also, be careful not to confuse the Ethernet jack in your room with the phone jack. The Ethernet jack is orange, and will easily accommodate the RJ45 cable.
- Restart your computer. After your computer is connected to the wall jack, restart the machine to clear any previous cached settings.
- Open your browser. Make sure your browser meets the standards described above. Your browser will be automatically redirected to the registration server at https://vercs.aurora.edu/logon. If you are not automatically connected, try typing that URL directly into your browser.
- Accept the Security Certificate.
- Enter your Student ID and password as directed on the page. On the next web page, you will be asked to enter your Student ID and password. If the password is not valid, you will be given an error message and may go back to make the correction. If your credentials are valid, you will be requested to reboot your computer. IMPORTANT: You should only register a host using your own student ID and password. Do not allow anyone else to register using your information. Any network or security events originating from a given host will be associated with the individual whose student ID is registered to that host and you will be responsible for all connections made under your name.

As part of the application process students will be asked to read and agree to abide by the provisions of the Aurora University Computer Use Policy. In particular, students are prohibited from networked computing practices that have a negative affect on the ability of other students to use the network. No device or application that has the potential of disrupting network services is permitted on the network without written permission of ITS. ITS reserves the right to block or limit access to specific Internet resources in order to assure balanced access to our limited bandwidth, to preserve system security, or to maintain consistency with computing policies.
Resnet policies have been designed to preserve the the maximum utility for the greatest number of students. We have established rules that are specifically designed with this goal in mind. In particular, certain high-bandwidth recreational uses such as network gaming have been restricted in order to preserve the Resnet bandwidth for student educational activities. We have also blocked access to certain "peer-to-peer" file-sharing services that are widely used to facilitate the illegal exchange of copyrighted files (most commonly music and movies) between desktop PCs over the Internet. Students are encouraged to contact Information Technology Services before purchasing certain recreational software applications to make sure they are compatible with current Resnet policies.
Information Technology Services accepts all responsibility for providing network connectivity, a reliable infrastructure, switching equipment, domain name servers, and maintenance of routing operations. Students must provide their own computing equipment and connecting cables.
Information Technology Services will not be able to perform installation, configuration, or repair services for student-owned equipment. ITS will provide, however, the same written documentation and telephone support that we make available to off-campus residents who need assistance with their personal equipment.
Only computers registered through this process will be connected to the network.
Network connections in the Aurora University residence halls will provide access only to the campus email server, instructional technology resources, and the public Internet. Access to the computer lab servers and networked printers is not be available from the residence halls. Students who would like to be able to print from their dorm rooms should plan on providing their own attached printer
