College of Professional Studies
School of Social Work
A
Message from the Director
Welcome to the Aurora University School of Social Work Web site. Our
program has a long and illustrious history dating back to the origins
of the YMCA on our George Williams College campus in the early 1900s.
The School of Social Work prides itself on its impeccable academic and
professional reputation as well as the dedication and strong commitment
from our faculty and staff to supporting our student population. We believe
in and embody Aurora University’s mission of providing “an
inclusive community dedicated to the transformative power of learning.” Our
ideology stems from the rich social group work and settlement house movement
from the turn of the 20th century. Mutual support and cooperation, combined
with a strong commitment to quality didactic, experiential and applied
education, are the hallmarks of the social work program.
The School of Social Work is fully accredited by the Council on Social
Work Education (CSWE). At AU, you will receive a solid professional education
in our BSW and MSW programs and you will also experience a tremendous
sense of collegial and student support.
As a 1982 alum of the MSW program, I know how important it is to
combine quality professional education with ongoing faculty support.
Faculty members are committed to helping you learn the theory and skills
necessary to become a competent social work professional and they are
dedicated to assisting you in finding your place within the social work
profession. We want you to succeed in your professional education, and
we will go that extra mile to help ensure your success.
Our faculty have extensive experience and education in the professional
social work arena, and they are dedicated to providing you with an academic
and practical social work education. Class sizes are small, which allows
for a greater exchange between students as well as an opportunity to
have meaningful interactions with your professors. Our faculty are active
in the social work field – in clinical practice, research and scholarly
writing.
In the MSW program, we have designed our recent clinical (including
a school track) and community/management concentrations to respond to
current social work practice trends, contemporary and “cutting-edge” theory
and application standards, as well as what is taking place and needed
within the communities our graduates may serve in the future.
Please look through this Web site information to gain a clearer understanding
of our remarkable social work program. If you have any questions or need
further clarification, please contact me or any of our social work faculty.
We would be happy to assist you in making this important decision.
After you have made the decision to pursue your MSW with us, please
contact Melissa Yovich-Whattam, Director of Graduate Enrollment at 630-844-5292 or by e-mail at myovich@aurora.edu to
receive more information or application materials. If you are interested
in the BSW program, please contact Donette Considine, BSW Program Director,
at 630-844-7842 or dconsidi@aurora.edu.
The social work program at Aurora University is entering into a very
exciting phase. We would like you to be a part of that process.
