School Social Work Certification:

Type 73 Certification:

The School of Social Work offers the opportunity to earn the Illinois Type 73 certificate for social workers as a part of the MSW program. You must apply to the Coordinator of the School Social Work Program and be formally admitted into the concentration. Those interested in working in the public school setting in Illinois must take certain course work approved by the State. At Aurora University this means taking the following courses and completion of the second internship in an approved public school setting with a minimum of 600 clock hours:

  • SWK 5610 Social Work Practice with the Exceptional Child
  • SWK 6410 School Social Work: Policy & Practice I
  • SWK 6420 School Social Work Policy & Practice II

Certification Tests:

The State of Illinois requires that all personnel working in the public schools pass the Basic Skills Test and the Type 73 Certification Test. The State Board of Education offers these tests several times a year. Students must take the Basic Skills Test in the fall of the academic year preceding the second year placement.

Internships:

Internships in the public school setting are fairly competitive because a small stipend is often (but not always) offered by the host school. It is important to have the internship secured by April. Internships are for the public school academic year usually starting in August and ending in June. Please note that even though this calendar is longer than the university’s calendar, students must commit for the public school academic year. Interns follow the host school’s calendar for days off even when these days do NOT coincide with the Aurora University’s calendar. Interns are expected to work over the university break time.

Post-Masters School Service Personnel Certificate:

For professional social workers that already hold a MSW degree, but wish to earn their Type 73 certification, Aurora University offers a 9 credit hour certification program. Students in this program must complete an internship in an approved public school setting. The ISBE School Social work Internship requirement is a minimum of 600 hours. Please contact our School Social Work Coordinator to determine if your previous experience can modify that requirement.

Students take the following courses in addition to the internship.

  • SWK 5610 Social Work Practice with the Exceptional Child
  • SWK 6430 School Certification – Post Graduate Course
