Welcome to the Physical Education Program

The preparation of a physical education professional is accomplished through a varied curriculum requiring a rigorous, interdisciplinary academic program. The learning environment, inclusive of classroom and field experiences, is structured to develop within the individual, demonstrable and measurable skills in effective communication, critical thinking, problem solving, creative planning, and leadership skills.

The knowledge base is derived from current research in physical education regarding philosophical foundations, instructional/motivational theories, available technology, human behavior/performance, and professional experience. Student development is nurtured within a creative learning environment through personal contact with faculty and is characterized by relevant educational opportunities. Dynamic delivery systems are designed based upon the needs and characteristics of the learner.

Students who desire active leadership roles in teaching, fitness leadership, and athletic training must possess a strong commitment to serving the whole person, through physically/therapeutically oriented activities that are appropriate for the age, ability, and interests of their clients. Students who enjoy the value and the benefits of physical activity/performance, who possess a caring personality, are sensitive to quality-of-life issues, and desire to motivate and educate other in maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle, are encouraged to investigate the available options as a physical education major.
