Spartan Women Top Stars on Senior Day

AURORA, Ill. February 14, 2009 - The Aurora University Spartans women’s basketball team defeated the Dominican University Stars 77-56 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Thornton Gymnasium in Northern Athletics Conference action.

The Spartans dominated the opening minutes of the first half, jumping out to a 19-6 lead. The Spartan defense stifled the Star offense while forcing a myriad of turnovers to make the lead to 32-11 with five minutes left. The Spartans would go on to take a 38-23 lead into the half. For the half, sophomore guard Jessica Mason led the Spartans with 11 points.

The second half featured the same story. The Spartans came out of the locker-room and quickly went on a 14-3 run, extending their lead to 52-27 with 13 minutes left in regulation.

The Stars, despite a desperate full-court press at the end of the game, were never able to mount any kind of a sustained run, and the Spartans would cruise to the easy victory, winning handedly 77-56.

Top Spartan performers included sophomore center Michelle Perry (17 points/6 rebounds), senior forward Kim Voiles (14 points) and Mason (13 points).

With the victory, the Spartans improve to 16-8 (13-5 NAC) while the Stars fall to 11-12 (6-11 NAC).

Next action for the Spartans comes on Saturday, February 21, when they play in the NAC Challenge Game against an opponent to be named later. The game location and time will be determined later as well.
