Spartans Defeat Regents in Women's Action
AURORA, Ill. January 24, 2009 - The Aurora University women’s basketball team defeated the Rockford College Regents 82-64 Saturday afternoon at Thornton Gymnasium in Northern Athletics Conference action.
The Spartans built a 16-3 lead early thanks to senior guard Meagan Re’s two 3-pointers and a stifling full-court press that frustrated the Regents for much of the opening half. The Spartan defense maintained their intensity following a Regent timeout and forced a myriad of turnovers to extend their lead to 26-12 with nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Spartans would not look back, as they would head into halftime leading 43-27. Sophomore guard Jessica Mason led the Spartans with nine points. Re and senior forward Kim Voiles chipped in eight points.
The Spartans started the second half much like they started the first half. Voiles led the way, as AU went on an 8-2 run to open up play. From there, the Spartans would go on to increase their lead to 60-36 with 12:18 remaining. The Regents would pose little threat, and the Spartans would cruise to the easy victory, winning handedly 82-64.
Top Spartan performers included Voiles (16 points/13 rebounds), Re (13 points), and Mason (13 points).
With the win, the Spartans improve to 11-6 (8-3 NAC) while the Regents fall to 4-12 (2-7 NAC).
Next action for the Spartans comes on Tuesday, January 27, when they host the Benedictine Eagles. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
