Spartans Douse Inferno

AURORA, Ill. December 9, 2008 - The Aurora University Spartan women’s basketball team defeated the visiting Inferno of Alverno College 78-65 on a snowy Tuesday night at Thornton Gymnasium.

The Spartans controlled the game early on, as they built a 20-9 lead early on. Senior forward Kim Voiles dominated in the paint and led all scorers with 12 first-half points.

However, the Inferno, behind strong first half efforts from freshman guard Alicia Kontowski (six points) and sophomore guard Gabby Allen (six points), were able to cut into the lead.

For the half, the Spartans shot 40 percent from the field (14-of-35) and went into the lockeroom up 40-27.

The Spartans continued their dominant ways in the second half, as their strong defense stifled the Inferno and led to 22 turnovers.

On offense, Voiles led all scorers with 22 points. Sophomore center Michelle Perry added 16 points, and senior forward Meagan Re chipped in 12. For the game, AU shot 28-of-68 from the field (41.2 percent) and connected on two-of-seven three-pointers.

Alverno shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field including just 3-of-15 (20 percent) from three-point range on the night.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-4 (2-1 NAC) while the Inferno fall to 2-4 (1-3 NAC).

Next action for the Spartans comes on Tuesday, December 16, when they travel to Mequon, Wisconsin to face the Falcons of Concordia University.
