Spartans Sweep Northern Athletics Conference Football Student-Athlete of the Week Awards
AURORA, Ill. November 18, 2008 - The Aurora University Spartan football team, winners of the inaugural Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) football championship and NCAA Division III Football Championship bid, swept the final NAC Football Student-Athlete of the Week Awards for the 2008 season.
Spartan football players, senior defensive tackle Marcus Goedken (Sugar Grove, IL/Kaneland H.S.) was named NAC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Week, senior wide receiver Cory Cowan (Peoria, IL/Notre Dame H.S.) was named NAC Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore kicker Ryan Subick (Mt. Olive, IL/Mt. Olive H.S.) was named NAC Special Teams Student-Athlete of the Week.
The trio led the Spartans to an undefeated conference season (7-0) with the 24-6 win over Lakeland College. That game was AU's ninth win of the year, tying a school record for wins.
Goedken had a team-high seven tackles, two tackles for loss (seven yards) and two quarterback hurries on the afternoon. His presence in the middle of the Spartan defense (ranked third in Division III) held the Muskies to 41 yards rushing in the game and just 183 on the day.
Cowan had four catches for 75 yards and two touchdowns. This season, he has moved into the AU record books in all single season and career receiving categories (receptions, yards and touchdowns).
Subick was a perfect three-for-three in PAT's and connected on his only field goal try of the day (29 yards). He is now four-of-five in field goals and 48-of-49 in PAT's on the year.
The Spartan Football team will travel to Monmouth College for the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Football Championships. The Spartans (9-1, 7-0 NAC) will take on the Scots (10-0, 9-0 MWC) on Saturday, November 22, 2008. Game time is set for noon in Monmouth, IL.
