Spartans Victorious Over Stars

AURORA, Ill. October 7, 2008 - The Aurora University Spartan women’s soccer team defeated the visiting Stars of Dominican University 4-0 in Northern Athletics Conference action on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at AU Field.

The Spartan’s first goal came off the foot of freshman midfielder Samantha Dykema, who scored in the 16th minute of the first half courtesy of an assist from junior forward Jessica Novickas.

The Spartans were up 1-0, when, minutes later, senior midfielder Kendra Sickinger netted her second goal of the season, as she scored unassisted in the 36th minute to put the Spartans ahead 2-0.

Like the first half, the second half was all Spartans, as Novickas scored her twelfth goal of the year a mere seven minutes into the period on an assists from senior wing Lindsey Horneck.

Some twenty minutes later, sophomore forward Claire Buchanan put the game away for good and thwarted any hope of a Dominican comeback when she scored her second goal of season on an assist from junior wing Amanda Hertz.

The Spartan defense was stout all day, as they limited the Stars to only three shots. Junior goalie Jenny Jarvis was solid, as she notched her seventh shut-out of the year.

With the victory, Aurora improves to 10-4 (6-0 NAC) while Dominican falls to 9-4 (8-2 NAC).

Next action for the Spartans comes on Saturday, October 11 when travel to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin to take on the Marian University Sabers.
