Spartans Victorious Over Vikings
AURORA, Ill. September 9, 2008 - The Aurora University Spartan men’s soccer team defeated the Vikings of Lawrence College 6-0 in non-conference action on a cool Tuesday afternoon at AU Field.
AU got off to a hot start thanks to sophomore midfielder Mike Emma’s quick goal on an assist from senior forward Chase Corricelli in the fifth minute.
Three minutes later, Corricelli scored on an assist from sophomore midfielder Tony Gutierrez.
The goal moved Corricelli into a tie with Terry Rock for second all-time on the AU scoring list. In the 31st minute, Corricelli passed Rock as he scored again on an assist from sophomore midfielder Nick Helmer.
Corricelli was not finished yet, as he scored again three minutes later on an assist from freshman forward Jim Kelly. For his career, Corricelli has 45 goals, seven behind all-time leader Hernan Campuzano.
Junior forward James Heidorn tallied the other AU goal on an assist from freshman midfielder Walden Sterrett seconds before the close of the 1st half. The final AU goal was a result of a freshman forward Nick Pelon header that was knocked in by a Lawrence defender.
Spartan goalies sophomore Kevin Soderstrom, sophomore Jamie McGuire and junior Josh Casteneada were solid between the posts as they combined for three saves in the shutout performance.
Viking junior goalie Steven Schnorr had nine saves in the losing effort.
The Spartans out shot Lawrence 26 to 6 in the game.
With the win, Aurora improves to 3-2, while Lawrence falls to 0-4.
