Women Soccer Break In AU Field

AURORA, Ill. August 29, 2008 - The Aurora University Spartan women soccer team opened up their 2008 season with a 1-0 victory against the Pioneers of Carroll University. The game marked the first competition played on the newly renovated AU Field. The women broke in the new field with impressive defense and ball control.

The first half was one of few but close chances for both teams. The Pioneer’s tested Spartan’s junior goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis with three shots on goal during the half. Jarvis fended off all three shots. The Spartans were denied twice in the first half by Pioneer junior goalkeeper Ashlee Reinke.

After the half, the Spartan’s put on pressure immediately. Their aggressiveness led to a Pioneer foul in which senior Katie Powell took the free kick. Powell placed her shot perfectly sending the ball into the upper left corner of the goal and out of the reach of the Pioneer goalkeeper. This proved to be the only goal the Spartans would need. Jarvis spent the entire game in net recording six saves.

AU looks to follow up Friday’s victory with another on Saturday, as they play host to College of St. Scholastica at 2:00 p.m.
