Spartan Women Grab Home Victory
AURORA, Ill. February 5, 2008 - The Spartans of Aurora University defeated the visiting Inferno of Alverno College 68-44 on Tuesday night in Thornton Gymnasium.
The first half was a defensive battle, with points coming at a premium for both teams. Aurora shot 29.0 percent (9-of-31) from the field while Alverno shot 25.0 percent (9-of-36). The Spartans were able to establish the seven point halftime lead (25-18) in large part to the seven free throws made on eight attempts.
The leading scorer at the intermission was Alverno sophomore guard Lisa Sorgi, who had eight of the Infernos’ 18 first half points. The Spartans were paced at half by freshman center Michelle Perry, who also had eight points on three of four shooting.
The second half witnessed a bit more offense, as both teams were able to find the basket with more frequency.
The Inferno came out and cut the Spartan lead to three (25-22) only to see Aurora respond immediately with a 14-2 run that put the game out of reach with 15 minutes to play.
The Spartans would keep up the offensive pressure, building a 25 point lead before the game concluded with the 24 point victory.
Leading the way was a trio of Spartan performers which included junior Meagan Re (14 points on five-of-eight shooting from the field), junior forward Kim Voiles (13 points, six rebounds and four assists) and Perry, who backed-up her strong first half and finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Ashley Daniels added a strong all-around game off the Spartan bench with five points, eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals.
Although the first half was plagued with poor shooting, Aurora managed to finish the game shooting 44.8 percent (26-of-58) and was five-of-eight from three-point range in the second half.
In the losing effort, Alverno sophomore guard Lisa Sorgi led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Freshman guard Gabrial Allen added 13 points for the Inferno.
The win pushes Aurora’s record to 10-10 overall and 8-5 in the Northern Athletics Conference, while Alverno falls to 5-15 overall and 1-12 in the NAC.
