Spartan Women Clinch Second Straight NAC Championship
AURORA, Ill. October 27, 2007 - The Aurora University Spartan women’s soccer team clinched the regular-season Northern Athletics Conference championship with a 1-0 win over Edgewood College on Saturday afternoon.
The win also earns Aurora a number one seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament that will be played next week and marks the second consecutive NAC title and third straight conference championship (Northern Athletics and Northern Illinois-Iowa) for AU’s women.
Much like the earlier game played between the men’s teams, the match was dominated by defense and physical play.
The lone goal of the game came in the sixty-second minute, as Spartan sophomore midfielder Kendra Sickinger found the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore forward Kim Knaub. It was Sickinger’s sixth goal and third game winning goal of the season.
AU sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis earned the shutout victory with two saves. She improves her record to 16-2-1 and picks up her school record tying 11th shutout of the season. She ties Alicia Martin (2002-2005) who had 11 shutouts in the 2002 season.
Edgewood goalie Ilana Bar-av had five saves in the losing effort.
With the win, Aurora’s record goes to 17-2-1 overall and 12-0 in the NAC. Edgewood, who will be the number two seed in the upcoming conference tournament, falls to 15-3 overall and 11-1 in the NAC.
