Spartan Men Pick Up Home Victory Over Rival Eagles
AURORA, Ill. October 23, 2007 - The Aurora University Spartan men’s soccer team defeated Northern Athletics Conference rival Benedictine University 6-0, Tuesday afternoon on AU Field.
The win pushes AU’s record to 11-3-4 overall and 7-0-2 in the NAC, while Benedictine falls to 2-12 overall and 1-8 in the NAC.
The scoring got started when junior forward Chase Corricelli found the back of the net unassisted, putting AU up 1-0 two and a half minutes into the game.
Corricelli quickly added another goal, this time with the help of senior forward Danny May, giving Aurora a two goal lead. The goals were Corricelli’s team leading 14th and 15th of the season and he now has 38 career goals, moving him to a tie for third on the all-time goal scoring list with Ed Guerra (1965-1968).
The duo of Corricelli and May switched positions in the 14th minute, when May picked up his 10th goal of the season coming off of a Corricelli assist.
AU senior forward Scott Anderson was the next Spartan to find the back of the net, this time in the 35th minute, off an assist from freshman forward Anthony Amedei. His second goal of the season put Aurora up 4-0 going into half-time.
The second half got off to a slower pace but AU freshman forward Bobby Gonnella knocked one past Benedictine senior goalie Jason Maestas in the 73rd minute. Corricelli picked up his second assist of the game on the play.
The final score came in the 85th minute when sophomore Danny Arroyo found the back of the net, giving Aurora its sixth and final goal of the game. Arroyo was assisted by Scott Anderson.
Lost in the losing effort were the six saves by Benedictine goalie Jason Maestas. Aurora’s goalkeepers (freshmen Matt Ness, Kevin Soderstrom and Bryce Johnson) combined for the shutout victory and two saves. Ness earned his sixth victory of the season.
Aurora returns to action on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., when they play host to Edgewood College in the Northern Athletics Conference regular season finale.
