Spartan Women Win 14th Consecutive on Senior Day
AURORA, Ill. October 18, 2007 - The Aurora University Spartan women’s soccer team sent the four seniors out in fine fashion Thursday afternoon on AU Field with a 6-0 victory over North Park University.
As if it were scripted, senior defender Alex Contreras scored what would eventually be the game winner in the sixth minute of action off a nice cross from fellow defender, junior Heather Skeen.
With gusting winds, the Vikings and Spartans played almost 30 minutes with little action when in the 33rd minute, Spartan junior forward Allison Bailey scored her first of two goals on the afternoon. The first goal was assisted by sophomore forward Jessica Novickas.
Eight minutes later, freshman forward Rachael Ladouceur beat Viking junior goalkeeper Gina Kuffel to give the Spartans a commanding 3-0 lead. Ladouceur was assisted by sophomore forward Kim Knaub.
AU struck quick in the second half when Bailey scored her second goal in the 49th minute, off an assist from sophomore wing Nikki Counsell. The assist by Counsell was her team leading ninth of the season.
Under four minutes later, Novickas scored her team leading 15th goal of the season off an assist from Bailey.
Knaub concluded the day’s scoring in the 79th minute (unassisted) to make the AU lead 6-0, the eventual final score.
Spartan sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis earned her eighth shutout of the season and improved her record to 13-2-1, while the Vikings Kuffel had 11 saves in the losing effort.
With the win, Aurora improves to 14-2-1 on the season and is 9-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.
