Spartan Women Pick up Non-Conference Victory

AURORA, Ill. October 3, 2007 - The Aurora University Spartan women’s soccer team defeated Elmhurst College 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon at AU Field. The win improves Aurora’s record to 8-2-1 overall, while Elmhurst falls to 3-7-1.

The scoring got started when sophomore wing Nikki Counsell hit the back of the net in the sixteenth minute off an assist from junior forward Allison Bailey.

Thirteen minutes later, senior wing Laura Wagley connected for her fourth goal of the season, coming off of an assist from senior defender Alex Contreras. The Wagley game winning goal would close out the scoring in the first half with the Spartans holding a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Early on in the second period, Bailey found the back of the net unassisted, giving Aurora a 3-0 lead.

Spartan leading goal scorer sophomore forward Jessica Novickas would not be held in check, tallying ninth goal of the season to put Aurora ahead by four with 30 minutes to play. Novickas was assisted by Counsell on her goal

The Spartans finished-off their scoring when Katie Powell found the back of the net in the sixty-seventh minute off of a nice pass from Counsell.

Aurora sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis’ shutout effort was broken up in the 75th minute when Elmhurst senior forward Kelly Huson notched her third goal of the season, she was unassisted.

Aurora returns to action on Saturday, October 6, when play host to Northern Athletics Conference foe Maranatha Baptist Bible College. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at AU Field, following the men’s game scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
