Spartans Conquer in 2007 Opener

AURORA, Ill. September 2, 2007 - The Aurora University men’s soccer team started off its 2007 season with a win over non-conference foe Carleton College on Sunday afternoon at AU field. The Spartans defeated the Knights 1-0 in the 2007 home and season opener. Aurora moves to 1-0 on the season, as Carleton falls to 1-1

The Spartans struck early with a goal by senior Tyler Klotz in the fourth minute. Klotz was assisted by fellow senior Jim Spann on what would turn out to be the lone goal of the game. Carleton goalie Derek Orth played a superb game, as he was under fire for most of the first-half. Unfortunately, the early slip-up turned out to be the difference in the game.

The second-half turned out to be just as physical as the first with both teams aggressively pursuing the ball. Defense was the theme as both teams went scoreless in the second half. Spartan freshman goalkeeper Kevin Soderstrom picked up his first career victory as a Spartan. The freshman recorded one save en route to his first career shutout.

AU returns to action on Friday, September 7, as they take on Wabash College at the Centre College tournament.
