Spartan Men Wrap up Double-Header Sweep

AURORA, Ill. January 20, 2007 - The Aurora University men’s basketball team handed Rockford College a 90-47 loss on Saturday evening. The NAC victory pushes the AU men to 15-1 overall, and 8-1 in the NAC.

Aurora wound up shooting 36-68 (.529) from the field for the game, but early on in the contest, Rockford held close to the No. 19 ranked Spartans.

An Allen Young three-pointer with 5:30 remaining on the clock in the first half gave AU a 27-24 lead. But that was as close as the Regents would get the rest of the evening.

Aurora went on a 14-0 run to close out the half and the game, spearheaded by Mike Leonard and his nine points in the run.

The stellar shooting performance was led by junior Mike Leonard. Leonard finished the game going 10-of-13 (.770) shooting from the field for 21 points and he also added a team best eight rebounds. Sophomore Chad Trudo was 4-of-6 (.666) from behind the three-point mark, which accounted for his 12 points.

Another Spartan performance worthy of note was Larry Welton’s night. Although his nine points was well below his career and season average, the junior did surpass the 1,500 point mark for his career. Currently, Welton sits at eighth on the Spartan all-time scoring list with 1,507 points.

Rockford was led by Dupree Powell (12 points) and Allen Young (10 points) and drop to 3-14 overall and 2-8 in the NAC.

AU had 16 players see playing time with 14 tallying at least a point.
