Welton Named NAC Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week

AURORA, Ill. December 13, 2006 - The Aurora University men’s basketball team received top conference honors as junior forward Larry Welton (Chicago/Thornwood HS) was named Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) men’s basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 10.

Welton led the Spartans (6-0, 3-0 NAC), who are now ranked No. 19 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, to a 2-0 week in the Northern Athletics Conference. The current D3hoops.com ranking for AU is the highest a Spartan men’s basketball team has had nationally in the program’s long and successful history.

Welton continued his journey up the all-time scoring list, averaging 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and two steals per game, while shooting 63.0% (17-27) from the field. Welton is currently 11th all-time at AU in scoring with 1,327 points.

In AU's 100-91 win over Wisconsin Lutheran, Welton had a game-high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. He shot 9-of-15 from the field, 3-of-6 from three-point range and was 8-of-10 from the free-throw line. In AU's victory over Maranatha (110-44), Welton came off the Spartan bench to score 18 points in 17 minutes and pulled down seven rebounds.

On the season, Welton is the leading scorer for AU with a 25.0 point average, while pulling down 7.0 rebounds and shooting 49.0 percent (51-104) from the field.

Welton and the Spartan men are in action next on Saturday, December 16, when they travel to Edgewood College for a Northern Athletics Conference contest. Game time is set for 4:15 p.m. in Madison, WI.
