Spartans Named D3kicks.com All-Region
AURORA, Ill. November 27, 2006 - The Spartan Women’s Soccer program made its fourth NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship appearance in the last six seasons. AU captured the Northern Athletics Conference championship with an 11-0 regular season record and went 2-0 in the NAC tournament. On the season, the Spartans out-scored their opponents in NAC play 84 to 6 (13 games). AU finished the season with a 17-4-2 overall record and captured their eighth conference title in the last 12 seasons. The previous seven titles came in the former Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference.
With team accolades, come individual awards as well: Senior defender Shalisse Mathieu (West Chicago, IL/Glenbard North H.S.) and junior wing Laura Wagley (Sycamore, IL/Sycamore H.S.) were named D3kicks.com All-Central Region after their fantastic seasons in 2006.
Mathieu, a Second-Team honoree, paced an impressive Spartan defense that had 10 shutouts, allowed just 20 goals in 23 games, while allowing just four teams to score more than one goal and just one scoring more than two.
Wagley, a Third-Team selection, was an offensive force for AU, scoring 11 goals (one game-winning) and also having four assists. She was part of the record-setting club, as she scored three goals in the first half against Concordia University – Chicago.
AU would go on to set or tie numerous school records including new marks in season goals (99), assists (76) and points (274).
