Spartan Named Inaugural NAC Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week

AURORA, Ill. November 22, 2006 - The Aurora University men’s basketball team received top conference honors as junior forward Larry Welton (Chicago/Thornwood HS) was named the inaugural Northern Athletics Conference men’s basketball Student-Athlete of the Week for the opening week of the 2006-2007 season.

In the Spartans’ season-opening tournament at Wabash College, Welton showed why he was named to the D3hoops.com preseason All-American Second-Team. Welton was named tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament team after averaging 24 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, two blocked shots in leading the Spartans to the tournament championship.

In AU’s season opener 71-63 overtime win against Indiana University-South Bend, Welton had a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. He had a game-high 23 points and five rebounds in the championship game 66-61 victory over Rose-Hullman Institute.

Welton and the Spartan men are in action next on Wednesday, November 29, when they travel to North Central College to take on the Cardinals. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. in Naperville, IL.
