Spartans have Record Setting Performance on Senior Day

AURORA, Ill. October 22, 2006 - The Aurora University women’s soccer team got off to a hot start, despite the frigid weather, on Sunday afternoon and rode that momentum all the way to a lop sided record setting 7-0 win over visiting Wisconsin-Lutheran on AU's Senior Day.

The scoring got under way as Lauren Thomas found the back of the net off a feed from Allison Bailey in the 17th minute. Thomas, a senior, would add a second goal later on in the 60th minute in what was her final home regular season game. The second goal which was unassisted tied a season record for goals at 83. The previous record was set in the 2000 campaign.

Erin Kwiatkowski, also a senior, would strike next on a penalty kick in the 31st minute to put the Spartans up 2-0.

Aurora controlled all aspects of the contest, out shooting the Warriors 34 to 2 for the contest. AU led 4-0 at the intermission.

Other goals for the Spartans in the first half were contributed by junior Laura Wagley in the 32nd minute and freshman Lauren Omsberg scored her first of two goals on the day in the 39th minute on a Thomas assist.

The second half saw much of the same action as Thomas led the way with her record tying goal, before freshman Kim Knaub tallied the record setting goal in the 66th minute off an assist from senior Anna Wallace. The scoring on the day concluded in the 81st minute on Omsberg's second goal.

Spartan goalkeeper Jenny Jarvis took one step closer to the record books herself as she earned her 10th shutout victory of the season with one save. The record for shutouts in a season is 11, held by Alicia Martin during the 2002 season.

With the win, AU improves to 14-3-2 on the season, 10-0 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) play, while Wisconsin Lutheran falls to 5-10-1 overall, 4-5-1 in the NAC.
