Spartans Overcome Deficit to Defeat Princi[ia

AURORA, Ill. October 18, 2006 - The Aurora University women’s soccer team went down early on Wednesday afternoon, but battled their way back to a 4-2 victory over visiting Principia College. The win moves the Spartans overall record to 13-3-2, and 9-0 in the NAC, while Principia drops to 12-5 overall and is 5-1 in the SLIAC.

The first half was dominated by defense as the two teams battled their way to a 0-0 tie heading into intermission.

The same could not be said for the second half. Principia struck first by scoring two goals within the first 15 minutes of the second half. Principia's Johanna Publicover scored in the 46th minute on an assist from Jennai Taylor. Taylor would tally a goal of her own in the 58th minute on a breakaway.

While trailing 2-0, Aurora’s Allison Bailey went unassisted to the net and cut the Panther lead to one on the Spartans first goal.

Less than three minutes later Amanda Hertz dished out an assist to Anna Wallace, knotting the game at two with under 20 minutes to play.

Aurora took the lead when senior Lauren Thomas put one in the back of the net at the 82:45 mark off a Nikki Counsell assist. Thomas would later add a second goal to seal the Spartan victory. Bailey assisted on the second Thomas goal.

The score remained as Aurora took home the 4-2 victory over the visiting Panthers.

Spartan golakeeper Jenny Jarvis improved her record to 13-3-2 on the season as she had six saves, while Panther keeper Eva Post had seven saves.
