Spartans Knock off Wheaton in Thrilling Fashion
AURORA, Ill. September 20, 2006 - The Aurora University (6-0-2) and Wheaton College (4-4) men's soccer team played a fantastic contest Wednesday afternoon with AU coming out on top in the non-conference match-up at AU Field 3-2.
AU got out on top with an early unassisted goal by sophomore striker Chase Corricelli in the 19th minute.
After a Wheaton handball, the Spartans were able to go ahead 2-0 on a penalty kick goal off the foot of junior midfielder Marshall Reed.
The Thunder would not give in as Steve Rigby scored in the 42nd minute to cut the lead to one before the first half of play concluded, he was assisted by Jason VanderVeen..
Wheaton scored again to tie the game at two in the second half, this time off the foot of Strider Ellass (Joel DeLass assist). But the Thunder could not stop the Spartans from scoring again as Chase Corricelli scored on yet another penalty kick for the Spartans, this time in the 81st minute.
Both goalkeepers played splendidly with AU’s Anthony Collins earning the victory with five saves and Wheaton’s Ryan Souders stopping three Spartans shots.
The Thunder out shot the Spartans 17 to 11 in the contest.
