Spartan Men Overcome Early Deficit before Knocking Off Knox

AURORA, Ill. September 7, 2006 - On a sunny afternoon at AU Field, the visiting Prairie Fire of Knox College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over the AU Spartan’s just five minutes into the non-conference tilt. The Spartans would go on to defeat the Knox 5-1 on AU Field.

Knox’s David Connelly scored off a free kick, beating AU goalie Anthony Collins. The shot would be one of three Knox would muster up all afternoon.

AU would answer in the 27th minute on a goal by junior defender Jim Spann. The Spartans took a 2-1 lead into halftime, when junior defender Joey Catrino tallied the 2nd AU goal with under three minutes to play in the first-half.

After tallying an own goal in the 76th minute, AU sophomore striker Chase Corricelli scored just 0:30 second later. Less than two minutes later, Corricelli scored AU’s fifth and final goal of the game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Unruh, posted a shutout over the final 45 minutes, allowing Collins to earn his first collegiate victory.

With the win, AU moves to 2-0-1 on the season, while Knox falls to 0-2.
