AU Student Honored for Research at National Convention
11/3/2009
AURORA, Ill. — Katherine "Katie" Lunsford, a senior psychology major at Aurora University, took third place in a poster contest at the American Psychology Association's (APA) national convention in Toronto, Canada.
Lunsford, of Kansas City, Mo., was honored for her research project, "Neuroplastic Changes in the Rat Dentate Gyrus 30 Days Following Neonatal Hypoxia Induced Seizures." She was the only undergraduate student in her division; other contestants were graduate or doctoral students. Professional psychologists judged posters.
Lunsford said she developed the poster as part of an internship for the past two summers at Scott & White Healthcare at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in Temple, Texas.
At Scott & White, she worked with her mentor, Dr. Lee Shapiro, on a study of changes in the brains of rats before they are born following seizures that are induced by lack of oxygen.
Lunsford plans to present her research at AU's 2010 Undergraduate Research Conference April 12-13, 2010.
