AU Announces New Faculty Appointments

AURORA, Ill. — Aurora University has announced new faculty appointments for 2009-2010.

Vicki Bergquist, Elburn, was named a visiting instructor of nursing. A staff nurse since 1983, she has been employed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and at Delnor-Community Hospital where she has provided care for patients with a variety of critical medical surgical needs. She received her M.S.N. in Nursing Education from Lewis University in May.

Jocelyn Booth, St. Charles, was named an assistant professor of education and Master of Arts in Reading Instruction program/faculty chair. She served as an adjunct instructor at AU since 2000 and a pro rata instructor since 2006. Booth has also served as associate superintendent for educational services for School District 214 in Arlington Heights. She received her Ed.D. in Administration and Supervision from Loyola University

Christina Bruhn, Cary, was named an assistant professor of social work. She has served as an adjunct professor at AU and the University of Illinois at Chicago and most recently served as a research specialist at the Children and Family Research Center at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bruhn received her Ph.D. in social work from the Jane Addams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois-Chicago in 2003.

Kristen Campbell, DeKalb, was named a visiting instructor of mathematics. She has served as a graduate teaching assistant at Northern Illinois University since 2001. Campbell received her Master of Science in mathematics from Northern Illinois University in 2004 and expects to receive her Ph.D. in mathematics in December.

Richard Carlson, Batavia, was named a visiting assistant professor of education. An adjunct and pro rata instructor at AU since 2005, she also taught graduate and undergraduate courses at Roosevelt and National-Louis universities. He served for 34 years as teacher and principal in the U-46 school district. Carlson received his Ed.D. in curriculum and supervision from Northern Illinois University.

David Curby, LaGrange, was named an assistant professor of physical education. He served as an administrator, teacher, and athletic director at Lyons Township High School and Niles North High School and most recently served as a visiting assistant professor at Northern Illinois University. He received his Ed.D. in Educational Psychology – Research and Evaluation from Northern Illinois University.

Steven Davis, Naperville, was named an associate professor of psychology. Prior to joining AU, he served as a teaching assistant at the University of Virginia and as a visiting instructor, assistant and associate professor of psychology at North Central College. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical/Community Psychology in 1996 from the University of Virginia.

Jeanne Flynn, Aurora, was named a visiting instructor of social work. She has been an adjunct instructor at AU since fall 2007 and held managerial and supervisory positions at the State of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for 31 years. Flynn received her Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Mary Grom, Antioch, was named a visiting assistant professor of education at AU’s George Williams College in Williams Bay, Wis. She served as an adjunct instructor at GWC since 2006. Earlier Grom taught elementary education in the Glencoe and Wadsworth school districts. She received her Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision from Loyola University Chicago in 2005.

Debra Kennedy, Aurora, was named a visiting instructor of political science. She served as a visiting instructor at AU during the 2006-2007 academic year and has taught anthropology courses at the University of Arizona. Kennedy received her M.A. in Sociocultural Anthropology and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in political science at Northern Illinois University where she has taught political science courses.

Teresa Kisch, Lombard, was named a visiting instructor in the School of Nursing. She has worked in the nursing field at North Suburban Clinic, Sherman Hospital, St. Alexius Medical Center, Kishwaukee Community Hospital and Kindred Hospital, and as regional staff development coordinator for Lexington Health Care (all in Illinois). Kisch also served as an adjunct instructor of nursing at Waubonsee Community College, Elgin Community College, Olivet Nazarene University and AU. She received her M.S.N. from the University of Phoenix.

Denise Krusenoski, Naperville, was named a visiting instructor in the School of Nursing. She has served as an adjunct instructor at Lewis University and the College of DuPage, as well as teaching stroke diagnosis and nursing education for patient teaching at Good Samaritan Hospital where she is on staff. Krusenoski received her M.S. in Nursing Education from Lewis University.

Abby Musgrove, Aurora, was named an assistant professor of music. She has served as conductor of the University of Kansas Oread Singers and Women’s Glee and choral librarian, director of music at Montini High School and church musician. Musgrove received her D.M.A. from the University of Kansas in May.

Mark Plummer, Aurora, was named assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. For the past nine years he has served at Marian University, Fond du Lac, Wis., as chair of performing and visual arts, music department chair and associate professor. Plummer has also served on the boards of the Fond du Lac Children’s Chorale, the Wisconsin Association of Jazz Education and the Fond du Lac Jazz Festival. He received his D.A. in music from the University of Northern Colorado.

Steven Rogg, Naperville, was named associate professor of education in the Initial Certification program. Prior to joining the faculty at AU, Rogg served as an associate professor of science education at DePaul University. He received his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, Biology Education from Purdue University.

Eva Serrano, LaGrange, was named assistant professor and coordinator of the Latino initiative. She began her career at AU in 2004 supporting efforts to recruit, enroll and retain Hispanic students. She has also served as an advisor to the Latino American Student Organization. Prior to joining AU, Serrano served as director of Title V Grants at Morton College, executive director of the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement and the Girl Scouts of the USA, consultant to the provost at Roosevelt University, and vice president and director of planning and resource development at El Valor. Serrano received her Ed.D. in educational leadership from Northern Illinois University.

Terry Shapiro, Lombard, was named an assistant professor of psychology. He comes to Aurora University from St. Xavier University where he served as an assistant professorial lecturer. He has also served as a part-time instructor at DePaul University, Benedictine University, Chicago School of Professional Psychology, North Central College, Illinois Institute of Technology and Roosevelt University, and currently has a private practice in Lombard. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa.

Jessica Vivirito, DeKalb, was named an assistant professor of education. She had been an AU visiting instructor. In addition to teaching courses at Northern Illinois University and Harper College, Vivirito taught middle school students and served as an art instructor for the Schaumburg Community Cultural Arts program and Young Rembrandts. She received her M.S. in Elementary Education and her M.S. in Social Foundations of Education from Northern Illinois University.

Thomas Watrobka, St. Charles, was named an assistant professor of education. He had served as a principal of elementary and junior high schools in Geneva Community Unit School District, Edgar County Community Unit School District and as a classroom teacher for nine years. Watrobka also served as an adjunct instructor at AU and was a pro rata faculty member for the 2008-2009 academic year. He received his Ed.D. in Education Administration from Northern Illinois University.
