The Passport to Adventure hands-on activities at AU's Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures include corn grinding in the traditional Indian way, loom weaving, an artifact puzzle board, a large North America floor puzzle, a child-sized tipi and the Artifact Zone.

AURORA, Ill. – Aurora University's Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures is among 60 Kane and DuPage County museums and nature centers participating in the summer 2009 Passport to Adventure program.

The 18th annual program is sponsored by the Kane-DuPage Regional Museum Association (KDRMA).

The free program, for children ages 4-12, runs until July 31 at AU. Center hands-on activities include corn grinding in the traditional Indian way, loom weaving, an artifact puzzle board, a large North America floor puzzle, a child-sized tipi and the Artifact Zone.

An artifact treasure hunt, the zone features pictures of museum objects on display. Kids are asked to find the objects in the museum and comment on why they think the museum put it in the gallery.

To participate in the Passport program, children pick up a passport at the center at Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place, Aurora, or at any of the other participating museums. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The center will be closed from Aug. 1 to Sept. 8 for installation of new exhibits.

Each page in the passport profiles a participating museum. When students visit museums, they can complete an activity designed for the program. For each activity completed, the children receive a stamp in their passport.

At the end of the summer, children turn in their passports to the library or museum that issued them. Participants visiting seven or more sites can receive the general KDRMA prize.

Founded in 1990, the Schingoethe Center is a family museum showcasing 4,000 Native American items. The collection was donated by Aurora residents Herb and Martha Schingoethe.
