6/8/2009

AURORA, Ill. — Gerald R. Butters Jr., professor of history at Aurora University, addressed a May 26 luncheon meeting of the European Commission at the U.S. embassy in Luxembourg City, capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
An Oak Park resident and film scholar, Butters discussed "From Slavery to the White House: African-American Leadership on Film."
The luncheon was hosted by the U.S. State Department. Representatives of EC nations and institutions such as the EC Court of Justice and Parliament attended.
Butters received a "Public Diplomacy" award from the U.S. Embassy Luxembourg public affairs section in recognition of his presentation.
Four AU students on a May 20-June 2 travel/study tour of Luxembourg and Belgium led by Butters also attended the luncheon. They were Robyn Byrd, Batavia; Elizabeth Horoszko, Hinckley; Adam Hosey, Yorkville; and Scott Krave, Aurora.
Butters' travel/study course, “Luxembourg and Belgium: Europe at the Crossroads,” was designed to introduce students to European politics in the 21st century.
Students were housed at the U.S. embassy in Luxembourg and met with embassy diplomats and cultural attaches. Additionally, students toured Brussels, Belgium; Metz, France; and Trier, Germany.
