Aurora University Honors Former Professor, Dean

WILLIAMS BAY, Wis., Dec. 6, 2007 —Aurora University has presented Glen Ellyn, Ill., resident Sandra Alcorn with the Simeon B. Chapin award.

Ted Parge, AU vice president for advancement, presented the award to Alcorn at an Oct. 26 meeting of the university Board of Trustees at George Williams College of Aurora University in Williams Bay, Wis.

The award is presented to a recipient who best exemplifies the character, interests, and dedication of Simeon B. Chapin, a trustee of George Williams College from 1901-1945.

Parge said, “As a former George Williams College professor, Sandy is a living testament to the school’s contributions to its students. Her scholarship and dedication in the classroom, as a dean of Aurora University’s School of Social Work, and as an author about GWC exemplify the spirit of Simeon B. Chapin.”

Alcorn served as a GWC faculty member for 15 years and then was dean of Aurora University’s School of Social Work for 17 years when GWC became a part of AU.

On Oct. 27 at GWC, she signed copies of her new book, “Strong Roots: A Group Memoir of George Williams College.”

In the book, Alcorn recorded stories of students who have passed through GWC for more than 100 years. She said their history is uniquely tied to that of the YMCA, founded by George Williams in the 19th century.
