Spartan Named NIIC Player of the Week

AURORA, Ill. April 13, 2005 - The Aurora University softball team had a second player named Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Softball Player of the Week this season, the fourth time AU has garnered the softball award. Junior catcher/designated hitter Kristin Cumbo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) received this past week’s award.

For the week in which the Spartans went 3-1 overall and in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference, Cumbo hit .615 (8 of 13) with two home runs and seven runs batted in. In the Spartans’ double header split against Benedictine University, Cumbo was four of six at the plate with two home runs, a double, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.

On the year, Cumbo is hitting .317 with three home runs, five doubles, 18 runs batted in, and a .550 slugging percentage. Defensively on the year, Cumbo has thrown out five of the six opponents that have attempted to steal a base. AU is currently 19-2-1 overall and 5-1 in the NIIC.

Next action for the softball team comes on Thursday, April 14, 2005, when they host Carthage College at the Fox Valley Park District Stuart Sports Complex in a non-conference double header beginning at 3:00 p.m.
