Spartan Named Men’s Basketball Player of the Week

AURORA, Ill. March 2, 2005 - The Aurora University men’s basketball team received top conference honors for the third straight week as senior guard Adam McCoy (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa HS) was named the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week by the conference’s sports information directors.

On the week, in which the Spartans captured the NIIC tournament championship, McCoy racked up 28 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the field and 5-of-11 shooting from three-point range against Benedictine University in the tournament final. On the week, McCoy averaged 18 points and four rebounds, while shooting 40 percent from the field (12 of 30) and three-point range (6 of 15).

Following the NIIC tournament championship, AU will represent the conference in the 2005 NCAA Division III Championships. The Spartans received a first-round bye and will take on the Wheaton/Calvin winner in the second round. AU also was regular-season NIIC champions for the second consecutive year.

On the year, McCoy is averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, while shooting 40.3 percent from three-point range. With his 1,188 career points, McCoy ranks 16th all-time and is three points shy of moving into 15th place.

McCoy and the Spartan men are in action on Saturday, March 5, when they host the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships in Thornton Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. AU will take on the winner of Thursday nights first round NCAA contest between Wheaton College and Calvin College.
