Spartan Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American

AURORA, Ill. March 2, 2005 - Aurora University senior men’s basketball captain and guard Adam McCoy (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American College Division Men’s Basketball Team, which is selected by Sports Information Directors throughout the country.

McCoy, a Second-Team selection, is a senior biology major at Aurora University and was named First-Team All-District two weeks ago. As a sophomore, junior, and senior, McCoy was named Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference All-Scholastic First-Team.

In addition to his excellence in the classroom, McCoy is a standout on the men’s basketball court at AU as well. He was named NIIC All-Conference earlier this week, as well as NIIC Men’s Basketball Conference Player of the Week for his performance in last week’s NIIC tournament.

This season, McCoy etched his name in the Spartan men’s basketball record books. On December 22, against Illinois Institute of Technology, he entered the AU 1,000-point club, becoming the 24th member. He is also the record holder for three-point field goals made and attempted in a career. Currently, McCoy is 242 of 630 from beyond the arc. On the year, Adam is averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.63 steals, and is shooting 40.3% from three-point range. For his career as a Spartan, Adam has 1,188 points, placing him 16th all-time, and 296 rebounds.

McCoy and the Spartans are 23-4 overall and are 2004-2005 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference regular-season champions with a current 11-1 record, and NIIC tournament champions. With the tournament championship, AU will represent the NIIC in the 2005 NCAA Division III men’s basketball championships.

This Saturday, the #20 Spartans will host either #11 Wheaton College or #14 Calvin College in the second round of the NCAA tournament after receiving a first-round bye. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Thornton Gymnasium, where AU is 13-0 this season and 54-4 since the 2000-2001 season.

The Academic All-District teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America members within the district based on the student-athletes’ academic prowess while being a steady influence on their respective athletic fields.
