Spartan Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District
AURORA, Ill. February 17, 2005 - Aurora University senior men’s basketball captain and guard Adam McCoy (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division Men’s Basketball Team, which is selected by the district’s Sports Information Directors.
McCoy, a First-Team selection, is a senior biology major at Aurora University. As a sophomore and junior, McCoy was named Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference All-Scholastic first-team. As a first-team member, McCoy will go on to represent District V on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America national ballot.
In addition to his excellence in the classroom, McCoy is a standout on the men’s basketball court at AU as well. This season McCoy has etched his name in the Spartan men’s basketball record books. On December 22, against Illinois Institute of Technology, he entered the AU 1,000-point club, becoming the 22nd member. He is also the record holder for three-point field goals made and attempted in a career. Currently, McCoy is 232 of 604 from beyond the arc. On the year, Adam is averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.54 steals, and is shooting 40.2% from three-point range. For his career as a Spartan, Adam has 1,139 points, placing him 19th all-time, and 284 rebounds.
McCoy and the Spartans are 20-4 overall and clinched at least a share of the 2004-2005 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Championship with a current 10-1 record. With the conference title share at least in their grasp, McCoy and the Spartans captured the NIIC men’s championship for the second consecutive year.
This Saturday, the #24 Spartans will travel to NIIC rival Benedictine University, currently ranked #25 in the latest D3hoops.com poll for the regular-season finale. With a win, AU will win the conference title outright, be the top seed, and have home court throughout the upcoming NIIC postseason tournament
The Academic All-District teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America members within the district based on the student-athletes’ academic prowess while being a steady influence on their respective athletic fields.
