Gronau enters Spartan 1,000 Point Club

AURORA, Ill. February 2, 2005 - Aurora University Spartan men’s basketball had its 23rd player enter the AU 1,000 Point Club in the 78-75 Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference victory over Rockford College Wednesday evening. Senior guard Drew Gronau (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood HS) tallied his 1,000th point at the free throw line with 13:50 left to play in the second half.

Gronau entered tonight’s contest eight points shy of 1,000 and finished the evening with 14 points on 4 of 11 shooting from the field, 1 of 5 from three-point range, and five of five from the free throw line. Gronau reaches the 1,000 mark in his fourth and final season at AU. He scored 196 points as a freshman, 277 points as a sophomore, 280 points as a junior and following tonight’s game; he has 253 points in his senior campaign. On the year, Gronau is averaging 13.3 points per game and is shooting 38.7 percent from the field.

In tonight’s action, Gronau had a double double, grabbing a game high 11 rebounds to go along with his 14 points. Fellow senior and 1,000 point member, guard Adam McCoy had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while junior forward Jeremy Cartwright chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds off the AU bench. Junior guard Courtney Carson added 12 points, five assists, and five steals, with freshman forward Larry Welton scoring 10 points.

Gronau and the Spartan men are in action next on Monday, February 7, 2005, when they host the Crusaders of Clarke College in Thornton Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference men’s basketball showdown. The Spartan men are currently 15-4 on the season, 5-1 in the NIIC and are one-half game behind Clarke in the NIIC.
