Aurora University Dean Authors Text Book

AURORA, Ill.-- Fred R. McKenzie, dean of Aurora University’s College of Professional Studies and director of the School of Social Work, has published Theory and Practice with Adolescents: An Applied Approach.

MeKenzie is a St. Charles resident. His first book, the 294-page softbound textbook was published by Lyceum Books, Inc. of Chicago.

According to McKenzie, his book brings together both theory and practice in a meaningful way for practitioners and students working with adolescents.

The author drew on extensive experience as both a practitioner and an academic to create a comprehensive book. Included are a strong theoretical base and practical techniques to use theory in practice.

Practice examples allow readers to see how theory applies to real-life situations. Nontraditional approaches, such as recreational therapy, games and play are included with traditional methods.

McKenzie joined AU in 1991 as a social work instructor. He was promoted to assistant professor, associate
professor and interim director of the School of Social Work before being named director of the school. He was
appointed dean of the College of Professional Studies in March 2008.

McKenzie earned his doctorate degree in clinical social work from Loyola University in Chicago in 1995.  He has a master’s degree in social work and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from George Williams College, formerly in Downers Grove.

In 1992, McKenzie received the first Harold F. Schrage Award as field instructor of the year from AU’s School of Social Work.

McKenzie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker by the State of Illinois. Professional memberships and associations include National Association of Social Workers (NASW), and Academy of Certified Social Workers. Additionally, he is listed in the National Association of Social Workers register, and holds the title of Diplomate in Clinical Social Work from NASW.
