Class Project: Collecting Discarded Electronics For Charity

AURORA, Ill, October 30, 2007The Kendall County Youth Service Board (YSB) of Yorkville is getting a hand from Aurora University students.A half dozen students in social work instructor Brenda Barnwell’s "Infancy through Adolescence" class are collectingused cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs and laptops to benefit the YSB.

Items collected are forwarded to a recycling agency. Donations are recycled for their component parts according to EPA standards. Funds raised will be distributed by the YSB to local agencies that contribute to the development of youth in the community.

Organizations currently receiving funds from the YSB include Aunt Martha’s Youth Services, Mutual Ground, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern Kane and Kendall Counties, Yorkville Parks & Recreation Department, Suicide Prevention Services, Kendall County Operation Snowball, and the Fox Valley YMCA.Barnwell said, “The opportunity to assist a local grass-roots organization is the result of class discussions about the many rolesof the social worker. Fund raising is a necessary requirement, especially for smaller agencies and service providers.“The Kendall County Youth Service Board is one of the few organizations that focuses only on the needs for infants through adolescents. It is the hope of the class to make a difference in their funding by assisting with the recycling program by gatheringthe PDAs, cell phones and laptops,” Barnwell said.

Drop-off locations for donations are the AU Social Work office, 433 S. Gladstone Ave., Aurora, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays; the Oswego, Plano, Sandwich and Newark public libraries; Oswego, Yorkville, Plano, Sandwich police departments; and Kendall County Sheriff’s Department in Yorkville.
