Aurora University Students to Stage Research Conference
AURORA, Ill, April 16, 2007- Aurora University's third annual Undergraduate Research
Conference will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, in the
University Banquet Hall in Alumni Hall at 1410 Marseillaise Place in
Aurora.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
About 50 students will explain
their research projects with DVDs, posters, PowerPoint resentations, or
traditional research papers.
Gerald Butters, dean of general education and associate professor of
history, is conference coordinator.
He said, "Aurora University students complete outstanding research in a wide
variety of disciplines. This is an opportunity for our students to share
their work with the community."
The schedule is:
* 9 a.m.: Cathy Evans of Aurora will present "The Effect of Caffeine
on Plants"
* 9:30 a.m.: Erin Kwiatkowski of Byron Center, Mich., will present"Haymarket Affair: The Silence of Immigrants" and Erin Hairrell of Big Rock
will present 'Ethnoterritorialism: Why ETA Wants Out"
* 10 a.m.: Drew Taylor of DeKalb will present "The Holocaust's Role in
the Formation of Israel" and Todd Kenig of Westmont will present "America's
Campaign-Finance Problem"
* 10:30 a.m.: James Spann of Park Ridge will present "Pythagorean
Theorem Demonstration" and Maritza Garcia of Aurora will present "Impetus
behind the Native American Boarding School Movement: The Non-Native
Perspective"
* 11 a.m.: Kelly Garrett of Aurora will present "Mass Murders: The
Story of Andrei Chikatilo and Angel Resendiz's Killing Sprees and
Punishments" and Elizabeth Horoszko of Hinckley will present "Educational
Problems in Illinois: Standardized Testing and 'No Child Left Behind'".
* 11:30 a.m.: Carly Wade of Plano will present "Nutrition and
Cardiovascular Disease" and Maricale Mejia of Bensenville will present"Musical Influence on Memory Recall"
* Noon: Posters will be presented by students of instructors Denise
Hatcher, Jane Davis and Debrah Kennedy
* 1 p.m.: Sarah Olson of Bensenville will present "Government Funding
for Illinois Public Schools" and Erin Kwiatkowski of Byron Center, Mich.,
will present "The Identity of 'Another' White Woman"
* 1:30 p.m.: Jennifer Lara of Montgomery will present "The Unbroken
Pentangle in 'Sir Gwain and the Green Knight'" and Tessa Enright of North
Aurora will present "The Relationship Between Endophytic Fungi and the
Amount of Starch Present in Lamina and Stem Samples"
* 2 p.m.: Janel Cuevas of Oswego will present "The Roles of Latina
Women in Film" and Margarita Castellanos of Aurora will present "Invisible
Borders"
* 2:30 p.m.: Anita Buss of Oswego and Heather Skeen of Loveland,
Colo., will present "Coping with Cancer through Spirituality" and Gabriela
Bustamante of Aurora and Tessa Enright of N. Aurora will present "Aurora
University Division of Natural Science and Mathematics Biodiversity
Collection"
* 3 p.m.: Courtney Lance of Plainfield will present "Madrassas in
Pakistan" and Sarah Gwynne of Oswego will present "Aging and Ageism: College
Students' Views of Older Adults"
* 3:30 p.m.: Amber Lackey of Montgomery will present "Aurora
University Students' Opinions on Sex Education"
* 4 p.m.: Jennifer Lara of Oswego will present "Eating Disorders in
Athletes" and Sarah Heinkel of Aurora will present "Grades: A Reflection of
Academic Success and Worth"
* 4:30 p.m.: Tracy Fox of Naperville will present "Toys, Gender and
Stereotypes" and Phillip McKeough of Aurora will present "Online Social
Networks: The Practical Application of Student Participation On, and
Perceptions of these Virtual Spaces"
