Farm Goes To College; Aurora University to host farm market Sept. 26

AURORA, Ill. September 11, 2006 - A pumpkin-carving demonstration will highlight a farmer’s market at Aurora University from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

The market is free to the public on the campus at 347 S. Gladstone Ave., Aurora.

Joe Kovalick, owner of Ben’s Giant Pumpkins and Produce, Sugar Grove, will carve pumpkins using hand and power tools.

The market is sponsored by the university’s wellness center. Center director Cheryl Block said the market celebrates September’s national 5-A-Day Month, which encourages people to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

“What better way to get convenient, affordable, fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables than at a farmer’s market!” Block said.

Cakes by Louvenia, Aurora, will offer mini loaves of banana, carrot, and pumpkin bread; Geneva’s Windy Acres Farm, Geneva, will provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants; Green Earth Institute, Naperville, will supply fresh produce and educational information on benefits of organic foods and environmental stewardship; and Ben’s Giant Pumpkins and Produce, Sugar Grove, will offer pumpkins and gourds.

Whole Foods Market of Wheaton will supply educational materials on organic and natural foods. The Kane County Health Department will offer educational materials on tobacco. Information on healthy eating habits will be available from AU’s Wellness Center.
