17 high school students learn leadership skills at Aurora University camp

AURORA, Ill. September 6, 2006 - Local high school students attended Aurora University’s fifth annual summer Future Educators Association conference Aug. 6-10 at the George Williams Campus of Aurora University in Williams Bay, Wis.

Sponsored by AU’s College of Education, the conference was designed to teach students leadership and classroom-management skills, and how to effectively lead FEA chapters at their home schools.

Events included leadership workshops, team-building exercises, and indoor-outdoor recreation activities.

Honored by their peers were Ula Eidietyte, West Aurora High School, Miss Congeniality; Kelsey Borg, Kaneland High, Most Positive Attitude; and Christine Hermes, St. Charles East, Most Involved in FEA.

AU students serving as small-group leaders were education majors Susan Gonzales of Aurora; Nicole Ogelvie, Batavia; Brandi Pfeifer, St. Charles; and Whitney Johnson, Sycamore.

Instructors from AU’s College of Education were Deborah Brotcke, associate professor of education; Alicia Cosky, professor and director, School of Health and Physical Education; and Pam Ferdinand and Judy Maxwell, conference co-directors and Future Educator Association coordinators. Lorrie Hamblen, Kaneland Blackberry Creek Elementary School teacher, assisted for a third year.

Since 1998, AU’s College of Education has helped found and maintain FEA chapters serving about 300 students at 15 area high schools. They are Batavia, East Aurora, Geneva, Hinckley-Big Rock, Kaneland, Neuqua Valley, Oswego, Oswego-East, Plano, St. Charles-East, St. Charles-North, Sandwich, Waubonsie Valley, West Aurora, and Yorkville.
