Educator to address current, aspiring social workers at Aurora UniversityAURORA, Ill. May 24, 2006 - “Managing Risk through Ethical Practice,” a professional development workshop for social workers, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 6 at Aurora University. Kim Strom-Gottfried, a social work professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, is the speaker. Social-work professionals and students are invited. Advance registration is required by May 30. Registration costs from $45 to $110. Call (630) 844-5294 to register or for more information. The workshop has been approved for 5.5 contact hours by AU’s School of Social Work. Completion certificates, lunch, and refreshments are included. Social work professionals are required to learn strategies for handling ethical issues that arise in their professional activities. Strom-Gottfried will discuss ethical standards, adjudication, ethical dilemma management options, nine core ethical standards, and reviewing and applying ethical standards to vignettes. The speaker teaches direct practice, communities and organizations, and human resource management at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her research specialties are ethics, managed care, and social work education. She holds the Smith P. Theirmann, Jr., Distinguished Professorship for Ethics and Professional Practice. Strom-Gottfried is the author of two forthcoming texts on ethics and has written articles and book chapters on ethics. She is the past chair of the National Association of Social Workers’ National Committee on Inquiry and is active in training, consultation, and research on ethics in social work practice.
