Local Educators Discuss Research Projects at AU Conference

AURORA, Ill. — Local residents were among current and former Aurora University doctor of education students who spoke at AU's seventh annual dissertation research conference on Saturday, Nov. 7.

AU's College of Education and the Institute for Collaboration sponsored the conference, "Informing Practice," in the University Banquet Hall.

The keynote speaker was Jennifer A. Schmidt, associate professor, Department of Leadership, Educational Psychology and Foundations at Northern Illinois University. She explored "Adventures in Studying the Experience of Males and Females in High School Science Classrooms."

AU graduates who spoke were:

  • Downers Grove: Steve Carnes, AU '09, principal of Whittier Elementary School in Northlake, presented "Resiliencies in Action: A Portrait of One High-Poverty / High- Performing School."
  • Naperville: Lisa Hichens, AU '09, assistant principal of curriculum and instruction,
  • Batavia High School District 101, discussed "College Readiness of 11th Grade Students: Identifying Characteristics Related to Success on the ACT."

Current AU doctoral students who spoke were:

  • Geneva: Kim Chambers, assistant superintendent of administrative services, Community High School District 94 in W. Chicago, presented "Illinois Public School District Superintendent Compensation: Influencing Variables."
  • Hoffman Estates: Lazaro Lopez, principal, Wheeling High School, Township District 214, presented "The Impact of Supplemental Reading Instruction on the Performance Growth of Secondary Students."
  • Twin Lakes, Wis.: Eileen Bruton, principal, Salem (Wis.) Middle School, presented "A Stress of the Imagination? The Institutional and Personal Causes and Coping Mechanisms of Stress and Burnout Among School Administrators."
