Native American Center Announces 2009-2010 Events

AURORA, Ill. — Displays, art exhibits and lectures highlight 2009-2010 events at Aurora University's Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora.
The public is invited and admission is free.
The schedule opened with "Peoples of the Plateau: The Indian Photographs of Lee Moorhouse 1898-1915," an exhibit of 51 black and white photographs of the interior Pacific Northwest as it transitioned from frontier life to modern era. The exhibits runs through Jan. 3, 2010.
The Moorhouse exhibit is part of AU's 2009-2010 Celebrating Arts and Ideas series, events including art exhibits, films, theatre, music and lectures.
Schingoethe Center events for 2009-2010 continue with:
- Nov. 4, 7 p.m.: "A Traditional Woman in a Contemporary World," a lecture by Marjorie Waheneka, a member of the Confederated Umatilla Tribes of Eastern Oregon.
- Feb. 2-March 28: "FRIDA KAHLO: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray," an exhibit of 46 color photographs of this Mexican artist, will be displayed through March 28 in the Schingoethe Gallery. An opening reception is Feb. 2 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
- March 11, 6:30 p.m.: "Tecumseh, Native America and the other American Dream," a film by Ric Burns, will be screened in the Schingoethe Center.
- March 17, 7 p.m.: Filmmaker Ric Burns discusses "Tecumseh, Native America and the other American Dream," his 90-minute PBS documentary, in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora.
- April 1-June 30: "Intrigue and Novelty," paintings, drawings and photographs by contemporary Native American women artists, will open with a reception April 1 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
Center hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
