Aurora University Sets 2008-09 Celebrating Arts and Ideas Series

AURORA, Ill.—Art, theatre, music, film, and lectures highlight Aurora University’s Celebrating Arts and Ideas series for 2008-2009.
The public is invited. Programs are free at 347 S. Gladstone Ave. in Aurora.

The schedule is:
- Tuesday, Sept. 9-Nov. 6 : “not for the season,” an art exhibition of works by Tyler Hennings, will be at the Dunham Gallery in Dunham Hall at 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. Hennings chooses banal subjects that have a subtle sense of amiable humor and warmth and paints them on a large scale for a sense of grandeur.
- Wednesday, Sept. 24 : “Dr. Strangelove,” a film, is at 7 p.m. in Perry Theatre in the Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. Donovan Gwinner, assistant professor of English, will introduce and lead a discussion of the film.
- Tuesday, Sept. 30 : “Presidential Courage,” a lecture by American historian and author Michael Beschloss, is at 7:30 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. The author of Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789–1989 and NBC’s presidential historian, will provide comments and context about the 2008 presidential campaign and sign his books.
- Saturday, Oct . 18 : Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues Show is at 7:30 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Siegel’s show combines classical chamber music and Chicago blues to bring out the best of both worlds.
- Monday, Nov . 3 : On election eve, AU’s Film Series presents “Iron Jawed Angels” at 7 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Henry Kronner, assistant professor of social work, will introduce the film and moderate a faculty panel discussion following the screening.
- Tuesday, Nov. 11- Jan. 2, 2009 : “Root & Shadow,” an art exhibit, showcases works by Christian Arrecis, Myongbeom Kim and Kim Strom, in the Dunham Gallery in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. Photographs document the manipulation of the natural world in an effort to preserve, enhance, provoke and reveal.
- Wednesday, Nov. 12 : “Towards Conversation — Difference and Disaffection in a Worldwide Church” will be presented by David Craig, assistant Lambeth conference manager for the 2008 meeting of worldwide Anglican bishops, at 7 p.m. in the University Banquet Hall in Alumni Hall, 1410 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. The sponsor is the Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action.
- Friday, Nov. 14-15, 19-22 : Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” will be staged by the AU theatre department at 7:30 p.m. in Perry Theatre in The Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. Directed by Denise Blank, assistant professor of theatre, the rollicking romp trades the politics of power for the politics of heart and comes to the conclusion that “all the world’s a stage, And all the men and women, merely Players….”
- Wednesday, Nov . 19 : Sherman Alexie, author, poet, and screenwriter, presents “The Business of Fancy Dancing: Poems, Stories, Punch Lines and Highly Biased Anecdotes” at 7 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Known for being hilarious and thought-provoking, Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Native American) is sponsored by the Schingoethe Center for Native American Cultures.
- Sunday, Dec . 7 : “Joy to the World!” the University Chorale Christmas concert, is at 7 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Directed by Christine Flasch, the University Chorale and The Music by the Lake Singers and Festival Orchestra present a delightful program of classical and popular holiday selections.
- Thursday, Jan. 8-Feb. 25 : “Confrontation/Contemplation,” an exhibit by artists Mike Knierim and Carolyn Bernstein, is in the Dunham Gallery in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. The exhibit evokes empathy and thus change, to simply present in the power of the visual, the opportunity to reflect.
- Wednesday, Jan . 28 : “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” is presented in the AU Film Series at 7 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Kathleen Bradley, chair of Special Education, and Gerald Butters, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will introduce the film and lead a discussion after the screening.
- Thursday, Jan . 29 : “How Will Global Christianity Transform American Churches?” will be discussed by Philip Jenkins, a noted author and the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Humanities at Pennsylvania State University, at 7 p.m. in Perry Theatre in the Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. The Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action is the sponsor.
- Friday, Jan . 30 : “What Will the Church Look Like in 2050?” will be discussed by Philip Jenkins, a noted author and the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Humanities at Pennsylvania State University, at 10:30 a.m. in Perry Theatre in the Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. The Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action is the sponsor.
- Monday, Feb. 2-April 25 : “With a Little Help From Our Friends: Gifts and Loans from Local Collectors,” an art exhibit, is at the Dunham Gallery in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. The Schingoethe Center shares artifacts and stories of those who collected and donated them since the museum’s opening in 1990.
- Tuesday, Feb. 10 : Tommy Emmanuel, two-time Grammy nominee, performs his acoustic guitar repertoire in this dazzling and engaging performance at 7:30 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora.
- Thursday, Feb. 26 : “Summers with Lincoln,” a unique look at Lincoln by author James Percoco, Lincoln scholar and member of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission Advisory Board, is at 7:30 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. This event is offered in conjunction with the Aurora Public Art Commission.
- Tuesday, March 3 : “Why Did Jewish-Christian Dialogue Start the Trend Toward Better Interfaith Relations?” a dialogue with Edward Kessler, director of the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths, and Martin Forward, executive director of AU’s Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action, is at 7 p.m. in Perry Theatre in The Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. Joe Dunham, AU professor of philosophy, will moderate.
- Monday, March 23 : “Bigger, Faster, Stronger” an AU Film Series showing, is at 7 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. Alicia Cosky, chair of physical education, and Jennifer Buckley, instructor of physical education, will introduce the film and lead a discussion after the screening.
- Friday, March 27-28, April 1-4 : “The Habitation of Dragons,” directed by guest artist Kurt Naebig, will be staged by the AU theatre department at 7:30 p.m. in Perry Theatre in The Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place in Aurora. American playwright Horton Foote tackles the relationship of brothers in his signature world of rural, depression-era Texas.
- Tuesday, April 7-Sept. 7 : The ninth annual Aurora University Student Art Show is hosted by the Dunham Gallery in Dunham Hall, 1400 Marseillaise Place in Aurora. AU art students showcase their paintings, drawings and photographs in this popular exhibition.
- Friday, May 1 : “American Sampler III,” the third annual spring concert by the University Chorale, is at 7:30 p.m. in Crimi Auditorium in the Institute for Collaboration, 407 S. Calumet Ave. in Aurora. The University Chorale, under the direction of Christine Flasch, presents a program of music from the World War II era.
