Basic Skills Test Reviews

The Aurora University Center for Teaching & Learning holds a series of seminars designed to help students prepare prior to each Illinois State Board of Education's Basic Skills Test date. Education students and social work students who plan to work in the public school system are required to pass this 5-hour test as the first step toward certification.

Students who have gone through these sessions have found them to be accurate and helpful. The review seminars are open to registered AU students, current applicants and alumni at no charge. The sessions are also open to people outside the AU community for a $25 fee payable at the first session attended.

Students are welcome to attend some or all of the sessions, depending on the needs of each student. The dates, topics, and locations for the current set of review sessions are:

  • Session 1: Saturday, May 17, 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
                    Topics covered: General Overview, Reading Comprehension, Math, part I
                    Location: Stephens Hall, room 222
  • Session 2: Thursday, May 22, 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
                     Topics covered: Math, part II
                     Location: Institute for Collaboration, room 124
  • Session 3: Monday, June 2, 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
                    Topics covered: Language Arts & Writing
                    Location: Institute for Collaboration, room 124

These sessions are for students taking the Basic Skills Test only, not the specific subject tests in Elementary Education, Social Work, History, Nursing, etc.

To sign-up for the review seminars, please call the Center for Teaching & Learning at 630-844-5520. All attendees are requested to print out the online Basic Skills Test Study Guide found at www.icts.nesinc.com and bring it to the sessions.

The Center for Teaching & Learning also tutors current students and alumni one-on-one for the test. If you are interested in meeting with a tutor, call 630-844-5520 to set an appointment.

The next scheduled date for the Illinois State Board of Education's Basic Skills Test is June 7, 2008. If you are planning to take the test on this date and have not yet registered through the Illinois Certification Testing System, please visit their website at www.icts.nesinc.com for test registration and other pertinent information.
