Assistant Director of Residence Life for Multicultural Education

Aurora University is an independent, comprehensive institution founded in 1893 offering bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Our two campuses are located in Aurora, Illinois and on the shores of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Residence Life for Multicultural Education will assume primary leadership for all areas of Residence Life related to multicultural education. This person will work in conjunction with the Director of Residence Life on diversity initiatives, such as programming and training/education.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

  1. Represents Aurora University in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current students, clients, suppliers and the community we serve. Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of our service, learns and uses operating practices of the department and Aurora University.
  2. Upholds the Mission Statement: Aurora University an inclusive community dedicated to the transformative power of learning.
  3. Handles confidential information with tact and discretion.
  4. Coordinates diversity initiatives in the residence halls; encourages student groups and staff to provide programs responsive to the interests and needs of the diverse population of the residence halls.
  5. Personally facilitates or collaborates with the other Residence Life staff to passively and actively create programs that build multicultural awareness and competency, and that fosters a climate of advocacy for diversity on campus.
  6. Assesses the issues, challenges, and general diversity climate in the residence halls. Assesses needs and evaluates the effectiveness of diversity education and programming efforts in the residence halls. Designs feedback and assessment instruments and procedures; collects and analyzes data.
  7. Serves as a training and advising resource for staff and students on issues of diversity and multiculturalism. Educates Residence Life staff on multiculturalism through training and programming presentations.
  8. Serves as a departmental liaison with other campus groups and constituencies to promote education and partnerships in the area of diversity.
  9. Maintains a calendar of multicultural events on campus and makes available to the Residence Life staff, in partnership with Student Activities and other campus resources.
  10. Creates and maintains a resource library on multiculturalism.
  11. Assists in providing general direction for departmental goals and objectives; Assists with short term and long range planning, and makes recommendations for departmental initiatives.
  12. Establishes positive working relationships with campus colleagues, such as Campus Safety, Counseling Center, Student Activities, Wellness Center, etc.
  13. Supervisors the Resident Assistant (RA) staff in the assigned residence hall/area.
  14. Maintains a high level of awareness regarding the facilities of the assigned residence hall, including forwarding and tracking work orders, overseeing the damage process for the residence area, and maintaining accurate records.
  15. Assists in the implementation of the Residence Life student conduct system.
  16. Establishes and maintains community with students living in the residence halls through individual contacts and group interactions.
  17. Provides administrative leadership in the assigned residence hall/area, including maintaining occupancy reports, overseeing a key inventory, tracking area community development/programming initiatives, etc.
  18. Establishes and enforces policies and procedures which establish a safe and secure living situation.
  19. Participates in rotating on-campus duty responsibilities in supervising the campus on weekends, weeknights, and vacation periods, and during emergencies.

Other duties and responsibilities:

  1. Performs other functions as necessary or as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

  1. Must possess a Master's degree in CSP, Higher Education, or related field and a minimum of two years post-Bachelor's experience in Residence Life.
  2. Knowledge of higher education and student development principles, practices, and procedures required.
  3. Effective oral and written communication, supervisory, and interpersonal skills required.
  4. Attention to detail and excellent time management skills required.

Health, dental, life, contributions to a 403(b), and tuition remission included. A furnished apartment is provided and a basic meal plan is offered when dining options are in services.
