POSITION PURPOSE: The Student Financial Services Counselor supports learning by providing financial aid counseling of undergraduate and graduate students at the university. Provides essential information to students seeking financial aid. Reports to the Dean of Student Financial Services.Core Competencies:

Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of our service. Learns and uses operating practices of the department and Aurora University.

- Handles all information with tact and discretion and recognizes the confidential nature of university business.
- Supports learning through performance of essential job functions and performing other duties and functions as necessary or as assigned.
- Provides individual counseling to students and parents regarding all aspects of the financial aid process; works with the family to determine a comprehensive financial plan at Aurora University.
- Provides financial aid services to all prospective freshmen, transfer, adult and graduate students as well as continuing students.
- Maintains and applies knowledge of the financial aid matrix and university policies and procedures regarding financial aid.
- Determines financial aid eligibility for students and calculates financial aid awards.
- Coordinates and completes verification processes, including review of compliance with federal and state regulations.
- Maintain and applies knowledge of loan processing and Entrance and Exit Interview requirements.
- Participates in financial aid workshops, seminars, and open houses.
- Experience in higher education preferred and in financial aid essential.
- Knowledge of financial aid when working with students in online programs is preferred.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills and a customer service orientation.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to interact with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and parents and to develop strong working relationship with colleagues, staff, administrators, students and the general public.
- Flexibility with an evolving work situation.
- Knowledge of spreadsheet systems.
- Knowledge of Datatel desired.
Special Requirements:
- Valid Illinois driver's license.
- Ability to travel when necessary to off-campus evening and weekend events, providing own vehicle.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to move about at those locations.
- Ability to move about campus.
- Ability to interact via telephone, in person and via electronic media.
